The Golden Age Reverse Flash is a distinct character from later iterations. Known primarily as The Rival, Dr. Edward Clariss was a professor at the university that Jay Garrick (the Golden Age Flash) attended. He believed he had recreated the formula that gave Garrick his speed.

Bitter after his claims were dismissed by the scientific community, Clariss used his knowledge to create a speed-enhancing serum. Donning a darker version of the Flash's costume, he became The Rival, a villainous speedster.

The Rival first appeared in Flash Comics #104 (February 1949). He was defeated by the Flash and seemingly vanished into the Speed Force during their final confrontation.
